Congratulations Mr. & Mrs. Kennedy, but couldn’t you have waited just 24 hours more?

The arrival of your baby seems to have overshadowed the birth of my own little pride and joy, which I delivered myself yesterday morning.

I’m talking about Lyndon’s my super-slimline manifesto. Lyndon says that the manifesto would be easy to digest, but I’m a bit concerned that it’s leaving a bad taste in people’s mouths instead. Already I’ve heard it called the “shortest suicide note in history” and read numerous opinions about how many words are in it, but very little about what our message actually is.

I thought I’d deflected those sorts of questions when I was asked about it at the press launch and replied that it’s short because I wanted people to actually read it. But now some wag has suggested that at £2.50 for less than 5,000 words, it’s not exactly value-for-money. £2.50 for a piece of history seems like a bargain to me, but Lyndon’s planning to put some up for sale on eBay, “just in case”.  Read more……

Rt. Hon. Sir Menzies (‘Ming’) Campbell CBE QC
The Liberal Democrats have launched the most extensive manifesto consultation ever undertaken by a British political party.

Every party member can log on to a special website enabling them to contribute to the creation of the manifesto for the next general election.

Today key party figures, including party leader Menzies Campbell, Chief of Staff, Edward Davey, Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, David Laws, and Chair of the Liberal Democrat Election Manifesto Team, Steve Webb will meet to set out the manifesto’s key themes.

The task of preparing the manifesto will be headed by Steve Webb, ahead of a possible snap election in the autumn.

For the next election the Liberal Democrats will produce a web-based interactive manifesto, which will use audio-visual communications as its centrepiece rather than the written word.

Commenting, Steve Webb said:

“The site is all about giving party members a real say in our manifesto for the next General Election.

“Unlike the other parties, we want a genuine conversation, and the manifesto we produce will be better as a result.

“The days of the mass-produced print manifesto are over. Our manifesto for the next election will embrace new technology designed to reach people who have been excluded from the political process for too long.”
